Dearborn officer takes his own life, police chief calls death tragic

A 33-year-old Dearborn police officer took his life late last month, shooting himself in the head, the Wayne County Medical Examiner ruled this week.
Christopher Hampton's body was found on Nov. 25 near the Southfield Freeway and Michigan Avenue. A 10-year veteran of the force, the officer had been cleared of fatally shooting 35-year-old Kevin Matthews five years ago, but still faced a civil lawsuit.
Police Chief Ronald Haddad called Hampton's death a "tragic situation."
Vermeulen-Sajewski Funeral Home in Westland is overseeing arrangements. Limited capacity services were held Wednesday. The Police Officers Charity set up a memorial fund for his daughter.
Hampton was involved in a $10 million wrongful death lawsuit against the city in which a judge ruled last year there was enough doubt about the police explanation for the shooting for the case to go to trial.
According to the police account: Matthews stood over Hampton in a driveway, pulled the ammunition magazine from the officer's belt, which was next to his firearm. The officer, still on his back, im608 review
. shot nine times, killing Matthews.
How the suicide will affect the civil lawsuit is unclear, but Hampton's death certainly focuses attention on mental health concerns, especially among law enforcement officers.
Suicide is a leading cause of death in the United States and a major public health concern, especially now, during the pandemic.
Suicide claimed the lives of more than 48,000 people in 2018, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There were more than two and a half times as many suicides as homicides.
Studies also have shown that repeated exposure to trauma leads to suicide.
In fact, more police officers die nationwide of suicide than in the line of duty, according to a 2017 paper commissioned by the Ruderman Family Foundation. The paper also suggested many suicides by first responders are not reported.
Experts say one challenge police face is shame and stigma surrounding mental health within professions that prioritize bravery and toughness.
In addition, the public remains largely unaware of these issues because they are unreported. Of the 18,000 law enforcement agencies nationally, only 3%-5% have suicide prevention training programs, the Ruderman study found.
Hampton was not charged by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, which said fatal force appeared justified in 2015, and a case against Hampton could not be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

The prosecutor said Hampton was chasing Matthews, who earlier that day was caught on video stealing a Red Bull energy drink from a gas station. There also was an outstanding warrant for Matthews in another police jurisdiction.
However, not all the findings agree in the case. According to news accounts, two gun experts who looked at evidence said in court that their analysis Hampton might have been standing when the shooting happened.
