Fashion Revolution Day, North Korea's Fashion Police, and Grace Coddington's
Cat-Hoarding
America has made every day an excuse to do something, whether it’s eat
pancakes or pant flags on your face. But one day on which you should really do
something is Fashion Revolution Day. April 24th marks the anniversary of the
Rana Plaza garment factory collapse in Bangladesh, and invites you to join the
revolution against mindless fashion consumption. Fair Trade hat designer and
Revolution designer, Carry Somers, aims to ensure the deaths of 1133 garment
workers, and injuries of a further 2,500 were not in vain.
"We will give a voice to all of the workers, to show where change needs to
happen, and how we, as consumers, can make a difference," she told Telegraph
Magazine's Tasmin Blanchard. "Consumer demand can revolutionize the way fashion
works as an industry. If everyone started to question the way we consume, we'd
see a radically different fashion paradigm."
Basically, we're all part of the problem, and can't just blame Forever 21.
But we can start by putting on our $15 slogan tanks and blame-tweeting selfies
at our favorite designers. Hashtag = #INSIDEOUT. (Image: formal dresses online )
Another thing you should do today is watch this documentary by
model-turned-Model Alliance founder Sara Ziff. An outspoken opponent of poor
treatment of women generally, whether they be Terry Richardson victims, underage
models generally, or exploited factory workers -of which 80% are women-Ziff
was inspired to film the documentary after reading a news report in 2012 about
the torture and murder of a Bangladeshi labour activist. "The fashion industry
should empower women, not exploit them," she told Vogue UK.
In case you weren't aware that Grace Coddington is addicted to cats, you can
now take a look inside her apartment. The Vogue creative director let Tim Blanks
and a photographer into her New York City home to talk about nudes, but we are
mainly concerned about playing that game when you try to count how many there
are of one thing in one photo. Did you get all 15 of the ceramic cats lining one
shelf in her kitchen?
Pharrell likes girls as almost as much as Grace Coddington loves cats. He's
now apparently curating an art exhibition in Paris, aptly titled "Girl,"which
will feature 40 works by prominent artists, most of them female, including
Marina Abramovic, Sophie Calle, Cindy Sherman and Tracey Emin.
In case you needed another reason to never go to North Korea, they're big
party poopers when it comes to fun with fashion. No-no items include skimpy
clothing, sunhats, blue jeans, and anything that looks remotely "foreign." And
while last month's report that all males were to get the Kim Jong-un cut turned
out to be not true, there are stringent rules on styling. "Excess bounciness"
has been suppressed for years.
Meet the real New York City club kids. At Feel Up, a new Wednesday party at
Gilded Lily, there are no fewer than 13 promoters, while a gay-friendly party at
Sankeys takes 18 people to coax patrons through the door. Apparently Grindr is
partly to blame.
TIME's annual ranking of the top 100 most influential people in the world did
not include Tavi Gevinson. It did, though, include Céline creative director
Phoebe Philo and Net-a-Porter founder Natalie Masanet, who are not only both
fashion-types but also both have vaginas. Yeah.
The new crop of FIT grads are entering the big scary world with an attitude
that’s refreshingly realistic but also a bit depressing. Unlike the designers
who all parted ways with instant ramen before hitting 30 - including Alexander
Wang, Proenza Schouler, and Jason Wu- many of these students will have to toil
much longer before they find success. Read More: formal dress adelaide
