23/7/2014 - YouTube wedding videos more popular than cats

Once upon a time, your wedding video was likely to sit on a shelf gathering dust, brought down only to punish family and friends.

These days your wedding videos can achieve immortality, and be shared with the equivalent population of Germany..

A quaint but upbeat video of ''Jill and Kevin’s Big Day'', which showed a bridal party bouncing and grinding down the aisle to the tune of Chris Brown’s hit Forever, remains one of the most watched amateur videos in history, with more than 85 million views on YouTube..

Jill and Kevin aren’t alone. Last month a Californian couple featured in a shaky amateur wedding video where the groom and his groomsmen, dressed in classic tuxedos, perform a tightly choreographed dance routine that wouldn’t have been out of place on Australia’s Got Talent. The video racked up 15 million views in just 10 days..

In fact, wedding videos are more popular than cat videos, according to YouTube Australia spokesman Shane Treeves, with 33 per cent more searches for weddings..

Treeves says there is no exact formula to making a viral wedding video, but believes there are some elements that can help..

''Popular videos tend to have three key characteristics. They’re entertaining or inspiring in some way, they’re something that you want to share with friends, and they’re often high energy with a fun twist at the end,'' he says..

''While some people just upload their wedding videos to YouTube to share with friends and family, others look to inspire others by sharing the joy of their creative dances, songs or extravagant gestures of love with the wider world.''.

In July, a YouTube video of a Game of Thrones inspired wedding, complete with wolves and a bloodied chainmail wedding cake, had already hit 150,000 views in only a few days. The wedding was arranged by video streaming service Blinkbox, which shows that the magnetic pull of these videos is so strong even corporations are keen to piggy-back on their popularity..

Treeves says searches for wedding videos have consistently increased over the past three years in Australia. In the past 12 months the most popular wedding-related searches have been for ''wedding songs'', ''wedding dance'', ''red wedding'', ''the big wedding'' and ''Indian wedding''..

His top tip for aspiring wedding-video debutantes is to be yourself. ''The best advice for a couple looking to become the next wedding star is to be authentic, think outside the box and have fun. If you’re both enjoying yourself while putting on a great show, your audience is more likely to want to share your enthusiasm with their friends,'' he says..

''Whether it’s a dramatic romantic gesture or a perfectly synchronised wedding dance troupe, wedding videos resonate with the YouTube community because they often surprise, inspire and delight us.''.

If you’re planning the next wedding video extravaganza, you may find there’s a lot of competition. Every minute, more than 100 hours of video is uploaded to YouTube. One comfort is that Australians are among the most prolific YouTubers, with more than 200,000 subscribers to Australian channels, placing us the top 2 per cent of channels globally..
